great monkey sage returns orientalist gaze
3 color linocut
A response across the century to Klimt's Lady with Fan, representative of that fine western scholarly tradition of orientalism, otherwise known as the compression and objectification of culture and history deemed 'other' into useful decorative motifs.
The East Asian folk hero of the Monkey Sage intervenes in this imposed narrative posture of flat-eyed lotus blossom – meeting the eyes of the viewer and baring herself in challenge, she seeks to reclaim a position as sexual author rather than subject.
